While it's true that San Francisco, Hong Kong, Paris and a few other cities are more expensive than NYC on average, you tend to get larger apartments than you do here. When you compare how much square footage you can call your own for the same dollar amount however, Manhattan gets you the least, meaning that Manhattanites pay more per square foot than anywhere else. If you're looking to rent a place in Istanbul and have a monthly budget of $1,500 at your disposal, you're going to be able to stretch your legs out with an average of 176 m². In Manhattan though, the story is quite different. With such a budget, renters can only expect to have 26m² to live in.
