Watch the Weeks-Long Restoration of New York Public Library's Historic Ceiling Mural in Time Lapse

The famous Rose Reading Room in the New York Public Library's flagship Stephen A. Schwarzman Building has been undergoing a massive repair and restoration project since 2014.

In this time lapse video from the library, watch as the famous ceiling mural in the Bill Blass Catalog Room is repainted due to "irreparable damage" on the original.

"The Catalog Room sky mural holds its own as a singular mural but also connects with the three murals in the Rose Reading Room, opening up the ceilings with space and light,” says Bill Mensching, Director of Murals at EverGreene Architectural Arts. “Our goal as artists was to honor Finn’s concept, and complete the series of murals that are timeless in their clarity, movement and gradations of color.”

After an original estimate of 2017, the NYPL expects to re-open the Rose Reading Room to the public in Fall of this year.
