When it was constructed in 1883, the Cornelius Vanderbilt II Mansion was the largest ever private residence to be built in New York City, a title it still holds today despite the building being long gone. It sat on Fifth Avenue between 57th Street and 58th Street in Midtown Manhattan, and rose 6 stories above ground.
