This great vintage photograph shows a group of school kids hanging out on the sidewalk sometime around 1958. The photo was captured in Brooklyn Heights, on the corner of Henry Street and Old Fulton Street by the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, though this Google StreetView shows that the area has significantly changed since then:
