This great vintage photograph from 1938 shows Pier 11 over the East River and the Lower Manhattan skyline. While most of the river's piers have been dismantled or filled in with landfill over the decades, Pier 11 still exists, though it has been rebuilt a few times. Here is a Google StreetView of how it looks from approximately the same spot today:
