Should NYC Crosswalks Have Lanes to Help Direct Pedestrian Traffic?

Redditor Industrialcat recently spotted this New York City crosswalk innovation which places directional lanes within in order to facilitate a more efficient crossing. It's not the first time something like this has been created. Should NYC crosswalks have directional "traffic" lanes?
