New York City's Styrofoam Ban Finally Goes Into Effect

Styrofoam packaging is now prohibited in New York City. Fines are steep, beginning at $250 for a first time infraction and rising as high as $1,000 for repeat offenders. While this seems drastic, businesses in the city were warned well ahead of time of the consequences and were given additional time to adjust their packaging practices accordingly. Additionally, there are many other packaging materials available to those in need of them that aren't nearly as toxic to the environment or slow to biodegrade.

Check out Local Law 142 of 2013 and the DSNY Determination on the Recyclability of Food-Service Foam for more information on the newly-enforced styrofoam ban in New York City.
