Photos from the New 33rd Street Pedestrian Plaza in Midtown

A new pedestrian plaza has emerged in Midtown at 1 Penn Plaza. Funded by Vornado Realty Trust, the space will eventually host free performances, workshops and other outdoor events.

The finishing touches were added to a temporary pedestrian space occupying the full breadth of 33rd Street just west of Seventh Avenue earlier this week. The plaza stretches a little less than halfway to Eighth Avenue, replacing what used to be westbound traffic lanes with planters, sculptures, a terraced seating area, and a painted surface to grab the attention of passing commuters.

This welcome addition to the area is only temporary however, as it has a removal date of October 11th, at which point the City will evaluate it's contribution to the area and decide whether it should be seasonal or permanent.
