This interesting map, recently shared on /r/MapPorn by somegermankid, shows each U.S. State that has a population less than that of New York City's 8.5 million. Reddit commenters said it best:
Hell, 16 states have a smaller population than Queens.
I think Wyoming has a smaller population than one of the apartment buildings I lived in.
Wyoming has fewer people than Staten Island alone.
New York state has more cows than Montana has people.
To be fair Montana also has more cows than Montana has people
