[WATCH] With Over 10,000 Vehicles, the NYPD Has the Largest Fleet in the U.S.

Serving our City of over 8.5 million people, the New York Police Department is the largest municipal police force in the United States. Those officers need to get around New York City, and as such, the NYPD also has the largest police vehicle fleet as well. Check it out in this short video from the department.

The NYPD has the largest Police Fleet in the United States, with just over 10,000 vehicles. The NYPD purchases approximately 1,500 vehicles every year. The NYPD fleet is at the cutting edge of technology: from LED message boards, to low frequency rumbler sirens, to advanced ballistic panels and windows, to green technology. The NYPD has 220 Smart Cars—that makes us the largest user of Smart cars for law enforcement. The NYPD may be the greenest police fleet in the world, with 1,600 hybrid electric vehicles and 60 fully electric vehicles. When vehicles are decommissioned, they’re sold at auction. But first, doors, tires, and other parts are recycled and reused. These measures save millions—both in gallons of fuel and taxpayer dollars!
