[WATCH] The Sad Reason There Are Tropical Fish In New York City

Believe it or not, NYC is home to colorful butterflyfish! But this story has a sad ending. These beautiful visitors to NYC are called Gulf Stream Orphans. I rode the subway to this dive site! Every year these Spotfin Butterflyfish and many other tropical reef fish are swept up by the Gulf Stream current and transported across the northeastern seaboard. If it reminds you of that scene from Finding Nemo, well it should! This is a real life version of that. But real life isn't like a Pixar movie and the Gulf Stream is a one-way ride. Actually it does make you wonder how Nemo and his father got back home in the film... probably best not to think too hard about it.
