Anybody who has tried riding a bike from Downtown through Midtown and up to Central Park would tell you that it is a frustrating experience. Taxis cut you off, delivery trucks and cop cars park in your bike lanes, and pedestrians jay-walk whilst looking down at their phones. This August however, things will be different. Well, for three Saturdays at least.
Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City's most valuable public space—our streets. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. In 2018, nearly 300,000 people took advantage of the open streets.
At Summer Streets, cars will be banned completely for 7 miles on Lafayette St. and Park Ave., letting you bike, blade, jog, or scoot all the way without having to worry about anything but the sun.
This year's Summer Streets dates are on Saturday August 3rd, 10th and 17th between the hours of 7am and 1pm. Check the event page for more info.
Summer Streets returns on Saturdays August 3, 10 & 17, 2019 from 7AM to 1PM. With nearly 7 miles of open streets and rest stops filled with free activities, there is plenty to explore at New York City's 12th annual Summer Streets! Run, workout, play, fly, eat, bark free along Park Ave from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park during this car-free event.
