This great vintage photograph from 1919 shows Delancey Street and the Manhattan entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge. At that time, there were trolley stations on both sides of the bridge, and a large elevated walkway over the top middle, removed sometime in the 1930s. Here is a Google StreetView of how the area looks today:
