New York may be the most important city in all of human history. Now that is a big claim because it is up against some seriously stiff competition, and even today it's not the largest, wealthiest, most productive or even most populous city in the world. But as it was becoming the metropolis it is today, it was also in turn the early foundation of what would go on to be the largest and most dominant economy of all time.
