The Most Common Restaurant Cuisine in Each New York City Zip Code

Redditor AnotherJeremy2 recently created this great map showing the most common restaurant cuisine by New York City zip code. We love our Chinese and East Asian food!

Data are from restaurant inspections by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and include all restaurants with a currently active status. Using R, I counted the number of restaurants by cuisine type in each zip code and determined the cuisine with the largest share. I excluded American cuisine restaurants as well as bakeries, cafes and similar. There are about 27 thousand restaurants in total comprising the data shown in the 263 zipcodes.
