The Closing Of The Last Independent Clothing Store On West Bleecker Street

Independent multimedia producer and writer/editor Susan Forste created this sad tale in 2012 documenting the closing of the last independently owned clothing store on Bleecker Street in the West Village of Manhattan. Bleecker used to be lined with tons of small mom-and-pop stores, but with the ever-increasing rents, only the large international brands can afford to hold storefronts on the historic shopping street.

When Arleen Bowman closed her shop after 25 years in business, it marked the final chapter in a decade-long transformation of the far west end of Bleecker Street in New York City. Surrounded by high-end international fashion designers, Arleen was the only independent retailer remaining.
