April 1, 1968: Stock-watchers observed the numbers on Broad Street, which showed signs of good news “as securities markets around the world generally placed a bullish tag on President Johnson’s bid for peace in Vietnam,” reported The Times. “Brokers said that markets hungering for good news in recent months seized upon the speech Sunday night by President Johnson,” which called for a halt to bombing in Vietnam and invited its government to “join him in a ‘series of mutual moves toward peace.’ ” The war lasted until 1975.

July 4, 1967: Psychedelic times at the Electric Circus, on St. Mark’s Place in Manhattan, where one might observe “a model in a purple and silver polka dot jump suit” sailing into “the arms of a man dressed as a gorilla,” as one reporter did in The Times later that year. “Then, as the walls crawled with protoplasmic blobs of colored light throbbing with the beat, the model and the gorilla began to frug.” The frug (pronounced froog) being one of many dance crazes sweeping the nation.

Jan. 22, 1966: Chinese New Year celebrations in Manhattan, which was the Year of the Horse. At a hotel, the Roosevelt Raceway recognized the event with an award created for the occasion, which was given to racer Dick Thomas. “A porcelain horse, reputed to be from the collection of Mott and Pell, was presented to Thomas, who was prevailed upon to say, ‘Gung hay fat choy.’ What did he say? Happy New Year!” reported The Times. “For those twin-double horse fans, who seek omens in almost everything, the year — for the Chinese — is 4,664.”

Dec. 8, 1929: Thirty-foot-tall cartoon Katzenjammer Kids marched — or rather, floated — in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to “an unknown destination.” The Katzenjammer Kids was a popular comic strip by Rudolph Dirks (later joined by Harold H. Knerr), who also created the spin-off strips Hans and Fritz and, eventually, The Captain and the Kids.

April 4, 1968: The presidential helicopter left Sheep Meadow in Central Park after a sudden surprise visit to attend the ceremonies installing Archbishop Terence J. Cooke at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. “Until last week,” said one girl in the crowd watching across the street from the cathedral, “I would have booed the President. But I’m confused about what’s happened in the last few days. I don’t know what it all means.” Presumably, she was referring to President Johnson’s recent decision not to run to retain office. Later that night, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.“
