Dec. 8, 1929: Thirty-foot-tall cartoon Katzenjammer Kids marched — or rather, floated — in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to “an unknown destination.” The Katzenjammer Kids was a popular comic strip by Rudolph Dirks (later joined by Harold H. Knerr), who also created the spin-off strips Hans and Fritz and, eventually, The Captain and the Kids.

July 9, 1976: “Queen Elizabeth II came to New York yesterday to make speeches, shake hands, become an honorary citizen, wave to thousands of New Yorkers — and collect 279 years’ worth of back rent,” The Times reported. “The rent, 279 peppercorns in a Steuben glass container, was paid to Her Majesty on the steps of Trinity Church, at Broadway and Wall Street. The church received its charter from William III, an ancestor of the Queen, in 1697, for a nominal yearly rent of one peppercorn. Until today, the rent had never been paid.”

October 3, 1979: An ebullient pontiff, thrown a ticker-tape parade by overjoyed New Yorkers, was shielded from the rain by an umbrella held by Terence Cardinal Cooke, the Archbishop of New York. At a gathering at Madison Square Garden, Pope John Paul II was cheered by thousands of teenagers. “If he’d put that guitar around his neck,” said one headmaster of a Catholic high school, “the kids would have blown the roof right off the Garden.”

March 24, 1993: Prince at Radio City Music Hall. “He has been making albums since 1978, most of them as a one-man band, and while rhythms and techniques have evolved through the years, Prince’s ambition to be all seducers to all listeners has barely wavered,” reviewed The Times. “The attempts he made at social relevance in the mid-1980’s have vanished; now, it’s back to the bedroom.”

Nov. 27, 1969: Youngsters found a good spot to view the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, from atop a telephone booth. “It was a day of abundance, not only of foods and goods, but of emotions also,” reported The Times. “Five raggedy children entered the Salvation Army cafeteria at 535 West 48th Street and, sitting among the weary old men and women who traditionally feast with the army on this holiday, received heaps of turkey and potatoes, peas and pumpkin pie.” Elsewhere, some G.I.s boycotted turkey dinner, to protest the American war in Vietnam, as did the Vegetarian Society of New York, to protest the exploitation of animals.

April 4, 1937: The congestion in Manhattan on this Sunday afternoon was not your typical mix of cars and trucks, but a parade of pachyderms, in town for the Ringling Brothers circus show. “The parade rumbled and clattered across the 125th Street Bridge, and from each corner children cried, ‘Hey, what’s in there?’ ” The Times reported from Uptown, where covered wagons containing the circus’s entertainments collected before the shows. “They pointed to canvas covered wagon No. 57, and it seemed a shame to yell back, ‘property,’ which would have been infinitely too prosaic, though true. So the answer was ‘lions,’ ‘tigers,’ ‘King Kong’ and ‘Mickey Mouse’ alternately, and in most cases the questioners were properly thrilled.”

July 31, 1974: When the Oyster Bar and Restaurant at Grand Central Terminal closed with little warning, diners and employees alike were dismayed. “When I want oysters on the half-shell and nothing more, where do I go?” asked one customer. However, it was expected to reopen soon (and did, with new management), and was reviewed favorably in The Times later that year (though the mussels, at $2.25, were deemed overpriced).“

In the late 1970s, Grand Central Terminal’s owners faced bankruptcy and, figuring they had a solution, nearly slapped a 55-story office tower on top of the revered architectural marvel. The terminal was saved by the Supreme Court’s decision in Penn Central Transportation Co. v. New York City, “in which the Supreme Court upheld for the first time the principle on which landmark preservation laws are based,” wrote Paul Goldberger in The Times in 1990. William Brennan figures as the hero in Mr. Goldberger’s tale, having written the majority opinion that prevented the terminal’s owners, Penn Central, from developing on the landmark and thereby securing its status as a structure of public good. Justice Brennan believed, like many others, that historic buildings and other structures “enhance the quality of life for all.”

July 4, 1967: Psychedelic times at the Electric Circus, on St. Mark’s Place in Manhattan, where one might observe “a model in a purple and silver polka dot jump suit” sailing into “the arms of a man dressed as a gorilla,” as one reporter did in The Times later that year. “Then, as the walls crawled with protoplasmic blobs of colored light throbbing with the beat, the model and the gorilla began to frug.” The frug (pronounced froog) being one of many dance crazes sweeping the nation.
