New York City is home to more than 590 plazas or privately-owned public spaces. These spaces could be centers of culture and conversation like Piazza del Campo in Siena or Trafalgar Square in London. But most of them look empty and lifeless. Why? Well, they weren’t really designed for us anyway.

Chun Wai Chan is the first Chinese principal dancer in New York City Ballet’s 74-year history. The 30-year-old who was born in China’s southern Guangdong province, says he still finds it “unbelievable” each time he hears his name announced as the US troupe’s top-ranked performer. Chan hopes his experience in one of the foremost dance companies in the world will inspire more Asians to pursue professional ballet careers. “Asian male dancers are definitely able to dance,” he said, “because I have been dancing forever.”
