Local author Patricia M. Salmon writes books about Staten Island history, including Staten Island Slayings: Murderers & Mysteries of the Forgotten Borough, Murder and Mayhem on Staten Island (Murder & Mayhem), and The Staten Island Ferry: A History. She has an interesting new book out titled Staten Island’s Brewery Barons and looks like a fun read on the borough's rich history in brewing beer.
The thriving tradition of German lager beer brewing began on Staten Island in the 1850’s. After vast numbers of German immigrants arrived in America, their knowledge allowed for a robust new industry that was welcomed and widely enjoyed by the imbibing public. Several German brewers wisely utilized the fresh water and geology of Stapleton to perfect their brew, while another thrived at Clifton and still another flourished at Four Corners. Staten Island’s Brewery Barons: Frederick Bachmann, August Schmid, George Bechtel, Charles Bischoff, Joseph Rubsam, August Horrmann, and Monroe Eckstein were the men who made Staten Island a “reservoir of Teutonic beer!”
