Pier 57 in Chelsea Will Soon Transform Into Upscale Restaurants, Shops and Markets

Pier 57 is a massive shipping pier on the Hudson River in Chelsea. It was built in 1952 and was dubbed "The World's Most Modern Pier" at the time for it's mid-century tech, fireproof design and other enhancements that contributed to the demise of wooden piers. Since 2004, the pier has been completely unused, so in 2009, the Hudson River Park trust tasked commercial development firm Youngwoo & Associates to repurpose the space into an upscale retail and commercial spot known as the "SuperPier", and is set to open later this year.
