Katharina Grosse Completes Fort Tilden’s Newest Outdoor Art Exhibition, Rockaway!

Standing abandoned and decayed in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Fort Tilden is desperately in need of a makeover. This past July, MoMA PS1 invited artist Katharina Grosse to bring life and community back into this old military building. The result? Rockaway!

Although it is nestled in the sands of the Rockaway Peninsula, Rockaway! is hard to miss. Using unexpectedly bright colors and large-scale painting techniques, Grosse turned this historical structure from a demolition to an exhibition, which is now open to the public, free of charge.

Watch and witness the stunning transformation of Fort Tilden and be sure to explore Rockaway! before is torn down at the end of the year.

Beauty is a very interesting form of intelligence that contributes to our ability to make sense of life. It is not necessarily the visually pleasing that is beautiful. That’s why I think color is so important, because it gets to you right away. It kind of gets to your senses before you even know you’re dealing with it
