April 4, 1937: The congestion in Manhattan on this Sunday afternoon was not your typical mix of cars and trucks, but a parade of pachyderms, in town for the Ringling Brothers circus show. “The parade rumbled and clattered across the 125th Street Bridge, and from each corner children cried, ‘Hey, what’s in there?’ ” The Times reported from Uptown, where covered wagons containing the circus’s entertainments collected before the shows. “They pointed to canvas covered wagon No. 57, and it seemed a shame to yell back, ‘property,’ which would have been infinitely too prosaic, though true. So the answer was ‘lions,’ ‘tigers,’ ‘King Kong’ and ‘Mickey Mouse’ alternately, and in most cases the questioners were properly thrilled.”

Nov. 27, 1969: Youngsters found a good spot to view the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, from atop a telephone booth. “It was a day of abundance, not only of foods and goods, but of emotions also,” reported The Times. “Five raggedy children entered the Salvation Army cafeteria at 535 West 48th Street and, sitting among the weary old men and women who traditionally feast with the army on this holiday, received heaps of turkey and potatoes, peas and pumpkin pie.” Elsewhere, some G.I.s boycotted turkey dinner, to protest the American war in Vietnam, as did the Vegetarian Society of New York, to protest the exploitation of animals.

L Line 8th Ave | But then you know that from the picture. I put the camera on the top of the gate meant to keep straying passengers out of the overrun area. I am not sure why that is actually necessary. I got me a bit more space which makes up for the signal blocking the view. Again, given that there is no where for a train to go beyond this point, the use of a standard signal seems redundant to me.
