“A street-cleaning cart in New York City, where there were said to be 450 of them in 1915. Earlier that year, The Times reported on other improvements to the city’s streets, at a meeting held at Columbia University by the three borough presidents and John T. Fetherston, street-cleaning commissioner. The four men “discussed the planning, construction and maintenance of public highways and public works and street cleaning before an audience including many of the prettiest young women students in the university,” The Times reported. The audience was attentive, “but the women particularly became enthusiastic when President Marks told them of his fight for free public markets,” the report continued. Alas, that topic was not on the agenda. Boasting about the borough with the most asphalt (Brooklyn), however, was.”

May 2, 1946: On its annual visit to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus drew record-breaking crowds — a “throng of 6,000, including outgoing patients, and more than a generous sprinkling of neighborhood youngsters” The Times reported. “For many, it was their first circus,” The Times explained, “such as tiny Oscar Turner, 5, wrapped in a pink bathrobe several sizes too large, who gave his nurse a most busy time. Oscar kept up a frequent charge to the red arena. He dared the elephants, he challenged the clowns, he laughed and pranced. ‘Great medicine,’ said Pat Valdo, the Big Show’s Ringmaster.”

Dec. 29, 1946: “It’s a lark!” exclaimed a passenger on one of the last trips of one of New York City’s last five double-decker, open-top buses. “It’s a shame they’re taking them away. During the summer months they’d be wonderful,” the woman added. “The Fifth Avenue Coach Company had ordered the use of the old open double-deckers discontinued as of 1 p.m.,” reported The Times, which also noted that the buses had been running there since 1907 and that “some of the old machines would be sent to Argentina and Cuba,” and others would be scrapped for parts.

Feb. 17, 1969: Celebrations on Mott Street to ring in 4667, the Year of the Rooster, favored the lion to the dragon, which, though “there is a tremendous difference between a dragon and a lion in the Chinese tradition,” The Times reported, the main difference to the casual observer “is that dragons are about 30 feet long and require 17 men or boys to operate, while the lions are short and need only two men.” Indeed, “to be chosen to play the head of a lion is, for a Chinese male interested in the martial arts, a matter of prestige.”
