New York City has a trash problem. With all the consumption habits and disposable packaging of modern City life, the New York City Department of Sanitation literally has their hands full. While changing lifestyle habits is the best way to help curb overflowing street bins, we can also design better containers to help keep trash where it belongs and off the sidewalks and streets. The agency recently launched a BetterBin Competition to design the next generation of NYC street garbage containers. You can win up to $40,000 to develop a prototype and potentially get a City contract to build them all!
The New York City Department of Sanitation, Van Alen Institute, and the Industrial Designers Society of America / American Institute of Architects New York, are seeking an interdisciplinary design team to respond to BetterBin, a design competition to reimagine the iconic New York City litter basket.
Check out the contest page to learn more about how to submit your design to the competition.
