Hart Island, located in the Bronx, is the final resting place for over a million people. It is known as a potters field, a place to bury the unclaimed, unknown or indigent. These burials are carried out by Riker Island inmates, and continue to this day. The island was once used as a hospital, asylum and corrections facility, and these structures can be seen now abandoned and crumbling.
