Brooklyn was once home to dozens of breweries, but they all closed up shop in the mid-19th century for various reasons, mostly economic. Williamsburg's Brooklyn Brewery was the first brewery to open in the borough in decades, setting up in 1987 under founder Steve Hindy, a former war-reporter with a fascinating history.
