Here's How Roosevelt Island's Vacuum Powered Garbage Collection Works

Back in 2011, WNYC took a tour of the Automated Vacuum Collection System (AVAC) facility on Roosevelt Island, making this great video in the process.

The Automated Vacuum Collection System (AVAC) uses underground tunnels to move all the residential garbage on the island to the compactor.
