New York City is a very dog friendly city, with multiple dog parks spread throughout all five boroughs, public parks which allow dogs and a general relaxed attitude towards canines in lease agreements. Like everything else, owning a dog in the City does come with a cost though, and that cost is higher that what it costs to raise a human child in most other places of the United States.
