The Gowanus Canal is not known for it's swimming spots. It is known for it's high levels of toxic pollution and contamination. The Canal's permanent smell even made it on this chart of the worst smells of New York.

So when PetaPixel recently published the headline "The Polluted Waters of NYC’s Gowanus Canal Turned into Colorful and Abstract Art", I had to click through as it surely must be a misprint. Despite my assumptions, there was no mistake. Brooklyn photographer Steven Hirsch has somehow found abstract beauty in the Canal. In his series simply titled Gowanus, Hirsch captures dozens of amazing shots like the one above.
