Artist and reddit contributor herrmannelig recently created these cool maps from Google Maps tiles that were seamed together, passed through a patchwork filter in Photoshop amongst others, the labeled with the neighborhood name in a good font-face. The artist only uploaded maps for Midtown and Astoria, but based on how cool these turned out, I would expect more to be made soon.
