New York City is considering extending Manhattan island with 1,760 acres of new reclaimed land. Called New Manahatta, the project would include homes for 250 thousand new residents, along with parks and a subway line extension, helping alleviate New York City’s housing shortage. It would also be elevated and bordered with wetlands and marshlands, which would absorb storm surges, protecting lower Manhattan from flooding.
