A new map created by renter screening site Rent Application shows every registered sex offender in the City, using data from searching the Public Registry.
New York State, like many states, allows you to search for a sex offender. The Empire State only lets you map individual sex offenders. You can’t plot a map of all of the sex offenders currently registered around your block or your neighborhood. For example, if you live on the Lower East Side, you can’t see all the offenders near you. Until Now.
It's worth remembering that while there are people on this map who definitely deserve to be there, you can also be labeled as a sex offender for streaking, urinating in public, dating a 17 year old while being 18, and other relatively harmless crimes.
The site notes that "Anyone who uses this information to injure, harass or commit a criminal act against any person may be subject to criminal prosecution."
