April 22, 1942: Red, white and blue balloons were toted into Times Square as part of a U.S.O. spectacle hosted by the vaudeville comedian duo Ole Olsen and Chic Johnson. Though the comedians made an appeal for “adequate recreational facilities for soldiers on detached duty in remote areas,” any air of patriotic unity dissipated as soon as the balloons were released, and “a few pugilistically inclined spectators were restrained from wholesale grabbing by the police.”

April 4, 1968: The presidential helicopter left Sheep Meadow in Central Park after a sudden surprise visit to attend the ceremonies installing Archbishop Terence J. Cooke at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. “Until last week,” said one girl in the crowd watching across the street from the cathedral, “I would have booed the President. But I’m confused about what’s happened in the last few days. I don’t know what it all means.” Presumably, she was referring to President Johnson’s recent decision not to run to retain office. Later that night, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.“

Aug. 3, 1975: Coney Island was one of the few areas of activity during that summer’s hottest days, as the “Coney Island Chamber of Commerce reported a crowd of more than 1 million people, including more than 5,000 who slept on the beaches overnight,” The Times reported. Elsewhere across the five boroughs, “New York City was a town in low gear,” as temperatures seemed to linger in the 90s without any respite in sight.

Dec. 18, 1969: A neglected block in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where a nationwide Model Cities program — which aimed to bring a holistic improvement regimen to selected neighborhoods in 52 cities — was seen as stumbling. “Half of the program’s first year is gone,” The Times reported, “but only $7.7 million of the year’s allocation of $29 million in Federal funds have been spent.” The mayor blamed a heavy-footed city bureaucracy. “The mood is typified by Prospect Place in Brownsville, flanked by desolate acres of rubble-strewn lots,” the story read. “Rotted tenements have been torn down, but almost nothing is being built because contractors’ bids have come in above the per-room cost ceilings permitted by Congress for Federal projects.”

July 18, 1967: “Boy am I gonna sue you. My back hurts. My feet hurt,” Barbra Streisand, the actress and diva, told Ray Stark, the producer of the film version of “Funny Girl,” which was being shot on the East River pier. A story cataloged the actress’s laments as the filmmakers shot take after take of her running down the pier with luggage: “This is the hardest work I’ve ever known. I had to be up at 6 in the morning. I’m not used to that. Normally I don’t get up until 1. I’m used to theater hours,” she said, adding, after picking at her finger, “I got thorns from those damned roses.”
