"A Clock in the Sidewalk", a Detailed Look at Downtown's Famous Barthman Clock

One of the most famous clocks in the City, the Barthman Clock has been embedded in a Financial District sidewalk since 1896. It was installed by Manhattan jeweler William Barthman in order to attract more people to his shop. Over the past 119 years, the clock has survived millions of people walking over it, numerous nearby construction projects, and the death of it's care-keepers. You can see the clock at the corner of Broadway and Maiden Lane, the site of the original Barthman Jewelers.
