New York City has built hundreds of miles of protected bike lanes on City streets over the past several years, but is it enough? With 18 biker deaths last year, many New Yorkers are asking why there is not more protection, and why many of the drivers who hit them are not held accountable for their actions. Learn more in this short video from BRIC TV.

After a tragic bike accident, the city's implementation of protected bike lanes gets called into question. We hear from bike safety advocates and activists on how they work with elected officials to provide safe streets.

Local comedian Jeff Seal recently stopped drivers who were illegally turning into crosswalks while pedestrians had the right of way, and informed them of their wrongdoing with increasing aggressiveness. The tactics were unorthodox, but the conversation still needs to be had.

At some point every New Yorker indulges in a cliched, yet gratifying, "HEY, I'M WALKIN' HERE" moment while trying to cross the street. But video provocateur Jeff Seal has taken this timeless pedestrian-motorist tango to a new level with his latest opus, which finds him creatively confronting drivers who fail to yield at intersections. First Seal tries to shame them (Spoiler: the drivers are shameless), then he gives them a taste of their own medicine, and when that doesn't seem to make much of a difference, well... just watch

The New York City Department of Tranportation recently unveiled a comprehensive safety plan for the high-traffic intersection of Flatbush Avenue, Atlantic Avenue and 4th Avenue in Prospect Heights, near the Barclay's Center.

Pedestrians must contend with long, angled crossings and lots of turning drivers. Since 2008, four pedestrians and one cyclist have been killed in the project area, which extends along Flatbush from Lafayette Avenue to Atlantic. Between 2010 and 2014, 57 pedestrians and 21 cyclists were injured, and 51 percent of the pedestrian injuries happened while the victim was crossing with the signal, according to DOT.

Check out the plan for more info, and then the this article on StreetsBlog for some insightful analysis.

Gothamist solicited videos to shame drivers who violate laws placing everyone in danger, and part 3 of the series now features a contribution from biker Christopher Robbins commuting from Lower Manhattan across the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn.

Most mornings, Canal Street is the main hazard—its mixture of double-parked cars (I'm looking at you, FDNY Engine 9, Ladder 6), box trucks, comically oversized buses, forklifts held together with duct tape, and other entropic distractions that can awaken even the groggiest morning commuter. Pedal, brake, pedal, dead pigeon, dead pigeon, pigeons eating vomit, skateboard, pothole, swerve, veer, green light, burning smell, that guy is really cackling what's he cackling at don't turn your head—casino bus!

Gothamist solicited videos to shame drivers who violate laws placing everyone in danger, and part 2 of the series now features an anonymous contribution from a Biker in Brooklyn.

In this installment of our series, our anonymous commuter travels from Flatbush to DUMBO. Along the way, the rider encounters 13 double-parked drivers who either force the cyclist into car traffic or send other drivers veering into the bike lane, and a few drivers blocking the box behind the crosswalk, to similar effect. Also of note is the bus driver who courteously allows a stream of bike commuters to pass a tight spot on Jay Street created by part of Downtown Brooklyn's construction boom. As the subsequent moments show, though, Jay Street is still one of the most chaotic stretches of bike route in the city.

Long-time Gothamist editor Jake Dobkin recently filmed his bike commute and tallied up all of the driving violations that put his safety in danger him on his short, 1-mile trip to work.

Our first clip comes from me, Jake Dobkin—a regular bike commuter between Park Slope and DUMBO. Going home from work I bike through Brooklyn Bridge Park, and then cut up Union Street, to avoid having to ride along Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn, which continues to be one of the worst bike lanes in the entire city. This adds about a mile to my ride each way, and as you can see from the video above, it is still not an entirely safe trip.

Gothamist is soliciting videos to shame drivers who violate laws like this. Read the full article to see how you can contribute.

Vision Zero is an initiative by the City of New York to drastically reduce traffic related deaths and injuries to drivers, passengers and pedestrians. The latest attempt to reduce the numbers of pedestrian deaths is a large piece of plastic installed on large trucks and big-rigs. These side guards prevent people from getting caught under the truck, drastically reducing the chances of being run over by the tires in case of an incident. The also provide some sweet gas savings for the trucks by streamlining airflow around the vehicle. Win win.
