Humorous Post-Apocalyptic Tour of New York City While Playing a Multiplayer Shooter Video Game

The digital war zone of "Tom Clancy's The Division," a dystopian multiplayer shooter game, is reappropriated for a pacifist city tour of dystopian Manhattan. Our absurdly humorous tour guide comments freely on the city's urban design and architectural past while trying to avoid being killed by stray bullets.

“New York is under martial law, which can be dangerous for us casual urban explorers,” warns our tour guide, dressed in full combat gear. His tour group, each carrying an AK-47, moves awkwardly in their avatars. The guide explains how to maneuver with keyboard controls. “We're in a narrative multiplayer shooter game,” the guide explains. “But today, we will walk through the battlefield with a peaceful intention and just focus on the city itself.”

"Operation Jane Walk" was directed by Leonhard Müllner and Robin Klengel. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries by independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.

Sunshine Laundromat in Greenpoint on Manhattan Avenue is just like every other laundromat, with coin operated washers and dryers, some vending machines, detergent and folding tables. There is one big difference between Sunshine and other laundromats though… this one has a pinball speakeasy and bar hidden away in the back. Sunshine Laundromat, located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is half laundromat, half pinball bar. In fact, it’s the only laundromat in New York City that’s allowed to serve alcohol. But what actually goes on behind-the-scenes? In this episode, we ask owner Peter Rose a few questions about this unique laundromat. From the weirdest thing they’ve ever found to the ‘best’ pinball machine in the establishment, Peter patiently answered our many questions and offered an insight into this secret world inside the unassuming laundromat.

8 Bit And Up is a great independently owned video game store in the East Village that has tons of vintage games from Nintendo NES, Sega Genesis, Atari and older consoles, new games for newer consoles, and everything in between. Local software engineer and designer Abhishek Singh recently created this incredible augmented reality version of Super Mario Bros. in which you can play as Mario in a real world environment. To test it out, Singh needed a long, flat space to emulate the level in, and The Mall at Central Park almost seems like it was designed for this purpose.

Super Mario Bros meets Augmented Reality in this crazy life sized first person experience! I recreated the iconic first level, dressed up as Mario and then played it in Central Park (NYC). Built in Unity3D for the Microsoft Hololens. This video was recorded entirely through the hololens with no post production.

Brand New Subway, a New Game Where You Can Design NYC Subway From Scratch

Brand New Subway is a cool web browser-based game from local electrical engineer Jason Wright that lets you design the layout for the NYC subway system, starting either from scratch or from any point in its history.

Players can choose to start from scratch or one of several NYC subway maps (including present-day, maps dating back to the early 1900s, or maps from the future). They can build new stations and lines to expand the system to new areas, or tear it down and redesign the whole thing. The game intends to evoke an imaginative spirit, to empower people to envision transportation according to their needs and desires, and to arouse the fun of tinkering with maps.
