Small Axe Peppers is a Bronx-born hot sauce company which has an interesting business model that helps support local urban farms and community gardens throughout New York City and other urban areas. The company will give pepper plants and resources to these gardens, then commit to buy back 100% of the yield when it comes time to harvest. These hot sauces then get turned into the "Bronx Hot Sauce" and others like it. Check out this recent video from our friends at ABC 7 to learn more.

Small Axe Peppers empowers urban farmers by providing free pepper seedlings - guaranteeing these small farmers a profit.

Elementary School P.S. 55 Benjamin Franklin in the South Bronx has an innovative program that is teaching urban farming to kids 5 days a week. Educator Stephen Ritz helps the class grow their own vegetables and serves them as lunch, as well as distributing the extras home to families. Learn more about Mr. Ritz and the program in this short inspirational video from filmmaker Aaron Kodz.

Globally acclaimed teacher Stephen Ritz shows how in one of the nation’s poorest communities, his students thrive in school and in life by growing, cooking, eating, and sharing the bounty of their green classroom. More than 50,000 pounds of vegetables later, he has figured out how to bring the magic of gardening into the heart of the school day for students of all ages.

The talented kids at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Jerome Park neighborhood of The Bronx have recently grew over 25,000 pounds of fresh produce in the school's dedicated 1,300 square foot hydroponic farming lab which uses only water and no soil. Learn more about it in this report from Pix11.

“Our students here at DeWitt Clinton High School have built a hydroponic farm. These plants are benefiting from recirculating water, which saves 90 percent of the water that you would use in traditional soil-based agriculture, and as a result also we’re able to use all of the vertical space in the room to grow,” said Katherine Soll, CEO and director of Teens for Food Justice. Inside a former science lab, students are growing 25,000 pounds of produce, which feeds 2,200 students daily.
