East 42nd Street between Second and Third Avenues is now Jimmy Breslin Way in honor of the legendary New York newspaper columnist. </p> <p>The Pulitzer Prize-winner covered the city for more than six decades. He spent many years as a columnist for the Daily News, which used to be located on that block. Breslin also wrote for the New York Journal-American, the Herald Tribune, New York Newsday and Newsday. He died in March at the age of 88. </p> <p>&quot;I didn&#39;t know Jimmy Breslin well, but like so many New Yorkers, I hung on his every word,&quot; said Mayor Bill de Blasio. &quot;Because he spoke about the people. He wrote about the people. He looked at this city from the ground up, from the grassroots up.&quot; </p> <p>The mayor only has the authority to temporarily rename streets. A permanent name change would need to pass the City Council.
