New York City is not only one of the most popular American tourist destinations, it is also one of the most popular holiday travel destinations. A New York City vacation can be the perfect way to relax and unwind on your next holiday but getting there can be a bit stressful!

Traveling during the holidays can be tough, car traffic swells and airports are at their busiest. With that being said, there is a reason why New York is the most popular holiday destination in the country. The stress of travelling will be completely forgotten once you reach the Big Apple. With a seemingly infinite amount of holiday themed activities to enjoy, New York City is the perfect tourist destination – beating out Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas.

Whether you visit for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s there will be tons to do. If you’re a native New Yorker it’s the perfect time to slow down your busy schedule and enjoy all of what the city has to offer.

Check out this holiday traffic infographic from LoanMart Title Loans:

Everybody hates trekking out to La Guardia or JFK. It takes forever, there are limited transportation methods you can use to get there, and it is just the wrong way to start or end a trip.

Could air travel in NYC have been different?

According to a 1946 article in LIFE titled New York City's Dream Airport, plans to build a full sized rooftop airport over Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen and the Upper West Side, were revealed.

The 990-acre Manhattan Airport was the brainchild of real-estate mogul William Zeckendorf, who also owned the Chrysler Building and Astor Hotel. […] Zeckendorf's $3 billion project – an astronomical sum today, let alone in the 1940’s – would have stretched 144 blocks from 24th to 71st Streets and 9th Ave to the Hudson River at 200 feet above street level. The building below would have contained restaurants, business, waiting rooms and ticket offices, much like Port Authority or Penn Station do today.

Obviously it was never completed, but with all the Subway lines converging in Midtown, it sure would have cut down an airport commute from just about anywhere in the City.

This amazing film is a full color, 22-minute tourist video showing television viewers in the 1950s what they could expect from a visit by train to New York City.

Educational public relations newsreel promoting New York City during the early 1950's. This film shows the major highlights one might have seen on a visit to New York City. Of course, arrival and departure from the Big Apple was by steam and electric trains, several of which are seen in this film.

The 64-year-old film covers many of the same tourist spots people flock to today.

Transit technology is ever-evolving, and this colorful map shows just how far we have come in only a couple of centuries, plotting out the areas that could be reached with one day's travel from NYC.

Philadelphia became a one-day trip for New Yorkers by 1830, but Washington was still more than 24 hours away. In 1930 St. Louis was just barely reachable by train in a day, but Denver was in reach that same year by plane. In 1934 TWA was able to fly three-stop service from New York to Los Angeles in 18 hours.

The terminal has been defunct for decades, but will convert into a fancy 505-room hotel by 2018, so let this video walkthrough from Great Big Story show you a bit more of the terminal's original beauty before it gets converted.

The TWA terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport sits abandoned, a perfect time capsule of aviation's golden era. We grabbed our cameras and explored this relic from flight's greatest days.

New York City is a great place to visit. But flying there — not so much. All three of the New York metro area’s main airports ranked among the 10 lowest-scoring airports in the country, with Newark Liberty International hitting rock bottom as the worst airport and LaGuardia coming in second-to-last

Top spot was nabbed by Canyonlands Field in Moab, Utah. The top spot of a place you would actually want to visit: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

You can see the farm — made from 2300 plastic milk crates bolted together — near the curb of Terminal 5 at JFK Airpot.

On August 7th, 35-year-old New Yorker Jeffrey Tanenhaus checked out a Citi Bike from an East Village dock and never looked back.

[He] exited Manhattan by ferry to New Jersey and began pedaling 500 miles and counting. He and the bright blue bike, which he has re-christened Countri Bike, rolled into Paw Paw, West Virginia this week.

His planned route will lead him through at least 15 states and will end up travelling over 2448 miles to Los Angeles. Citi Bike has yet to comment on the trip, or what the late fees associated with the trek will work out to.

Keep track of Tanenhaus' journey at countribike.com
