The long-awaited transformation of New York Penn Station is officially underway, marking one of the most ambitious rail overhauls in American history. As detailed in this video by ONtheTrains, the project has hit major milestones, with construction set to begin by late 2027, aiming to transform the cramped, outdated station into a modern, bright, and efficient transportation hub. Amtrak has already committed over $140 million and is working closely with the MTA to streamline the process, while the search for a Master Developer is ongoing to oversee the estimated $7 billion project. Despite significant funding and logistical challenges, the vision is to create a world-class station worthy of New York City, finally rectifying the controversial demolition of the original grand Penn Station in the 1960s.

America’s grand rail halls are turning into luxury billboards on steel rails. Walk into Manhattan’s $4-billion Oculus and you’ll join thousands of people who sweep past Pandora, Boss, luxury watch displays, and marble floors every day—yet almost no one ducks into the stores.

Cheap PATH fares are the lure, but the real money lies upstairs where Westfield bought the retail rights for $600 million (and later another $800 million) to chase eyeballs, not receipts.

The logic is simple but staggering: One huge station can swallow the sales—or at least the advertising value—of dozens of street-corner shops. Grand Central needs $2.7 billion in repairs over the next three years, yet its commuter railroads are running billion-dollar deficits; luxury leases promise a revenue stream that tickets never could.

In other words, the future of American rail may hinge less on locomotives and more on whether commuters will impulse-shop a $200 rain parka on the way to track 17.

The first time I ever went to Penn station, I couldn’t find it! That’s because as popular as it is, it exists underground and borrows its landmark from Madison Square Garden. Today it has Moynihan Train Hall as its headhouse. But Moynihan still does not cater to all train systems that go through Penn Station. Renovations are happening now to improve the visibility of the original Penn Station, but that is months from now. So in this video, I am breaking down how it’s all laid out so you can better navigate your way through this hidden (yet important) train station.

The current Grand Central Terminal opened in 1913 as one of New York City's grandest public areas built in the Gilded Age. This vintage poster from 1939 shows an interesting cross-section the Terminal's famous Main Concourse.

From the New York Central Railroad comes this cool cutaway poster into Grand Central Terminal circa 1939, when train travel reigned supreme. The zodiac ceiling in the main concourse looks beautifully blue. There’s the main waiting room, now called Vanderbilt Hall, as well as a restaurant concourse, plus various lower levels connecting passengers to commuter trains and subways.

TAKE a look at any New York City bucket list and you’ll probably find Grand Central. The terminal is known for its stunning architecture, iconic ceiling, and as the second busiest train hub in the city. Then there’s Penn Station. With over 600,000 daily passengers at its peak, it's the busiest train station in the western hemisphere – but it isn’t exactly world class. Its confusing layout, low ceilings and crowded corridors makes it a part of the city that many avoid. But that’s all about to change.
