In New York City, installing these reflective rooftops supports the City's goal to reduce carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050.

[WATCH] Here's How We Will See Today's Solar Eclipse in New York City

By now you've probably heard about the Great American Solar Eclipse taking place later today. While New York City is not in the path of the totality (a full eclipse), we will see about 72% blockage of the sun when the moon's orbit causes it to pass between the sun and the Earth. In this video from the American Museum of Natural History, learn all about the solar event, and how we will see it here in New York City, amongst other cities.

A total solar eclipse is a singularly magnificent phenomenon. The Great American Eclipse on August 21, 2017, will be visible as either a partial or a total eclipse throughout North America. See how it appears from various vantage points on Earth, and watch from space as the shadow sweeps across the continent.

The partial eclipse begins at 1:23pm, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 2:44pm, and the eclipse partial ending at 4:00pm EDT.

Manhattanhenge, where the setting sun aligns perfectly with the Manhattan street grid, is happening this Monday and Tuesday. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson offers up some viewing tips, courtesy of a recent interview with Thirteen.

For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas.

For the best viewing experience, Neil Degrasse Tyson offers some tips:

For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas.

Today, July 11th is the full-sun setting on the grid while tomorrow, July 12th will have the half-sun setting on the grid. Sunset is at 8:28 p.m. but you should take a position at least 30 minutes before it starts to get the best views.
