Vintage Photograph Shows Thousands of Beachgoers on Packed Coney Island Beach in 1975

The Lively Morgue was a daily photo blog from the New York Times in which an original photo from the newspaper's archives is reposted along with tidbits of information gleaned from the historical article it accompanied. Along with a rescan of the original photograph, the backs of each photo were also scanned, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the editorial process of one of the world's best newspapers.

This posting featured an aerial photograph of thousands of beachgoers, captured over Coney Island beach on a hot summer's day in August, 1975.

Aug. 3, 1975: Coney Island was one of the few areas of activity during that summer’s hottest days, as the “Coney Island Chamber of Commerce reported a crowd of more than 1 million people, including more than 5,000 who slept on the beaches overnight,” The Times reported. Elsewhere across the five boroughs, “New York City was a town in low gear,” as temperatures seemed to linger in the 90s without any respite in sight.

NYC Offering Free Summer Meals for Children 18 & Under Until August 30

Free breakfast and lunch are available at nearly 1,200 schools, pools, parks, and libraries across New York City. And the best part? You don’t have to register or show an ID or documentation to receive free meals!

Anybody who has tried riding a bike from Downtown through Midtown and up to Central Park would tell you that it is a frustrating experience. Taxis cut you off, delivery trucks and cop cars park in your bike lanes, and pedestrians jay-walk whilst looking down at their phones. This August however, things will be different. Well, for three Saturdays at least.

Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City's most valuable public space—our streets. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. In 2018, nearly 300,000 people took advantage of the open streets.

At Summer Streets, cars will be banned completely for 7 miles on Lafayette St. and Park Ave., letting you bike, blade, jog, or scoot all the way without having to worry about anything but the sun.

This year's Summer Streets dates are on Saturday August 3rd, 10th and 17th between the hours of 7am and 1pm. Check the event page for more info.

Summer Streets returns on Saturdays August 3, 10 & 17, 2019 from 7AM to 1PM. With nearly 7 miles of open streets and rest stops filled with free activities, there is plenty to explore at New York City's 12th annual Summer Streets!
