Now in it's tenth year, the State of the Chains report from the Center for an Urban Future is an annual report which studies how major retail and food chains impact New York City. The 2017 report was just released and shows a 1.8% increase in the number of chains City-wide.

The tenth annual ranking of national retailers in New York City by the Center for an Urban Future (CUF) shows a 1.8 percent increase in the number of store locations over last year. Though this is the ninth consecutive year with a net increase in national chain stores across the five boroughs, the growth was limited to a relatively small number of retailers. […] CUF’s analysis shows that the 296 retailers listed in last year’s ranking expanded their footprint in New York City by 94 store locations, growing from a total of 7,223 stores in 2016 to 7,317 stores in 2017—a 1.8 percent increase. Chains gained locations in every borough except Staten Island.

The number one retailer City-wide? Dunkin Donuts with 612 stores across the 5 boroughs.

Check out the full report for full details and insight into what these numbers mean for our City.

A new report from the University of Minnesota shows that New York City has the easiest access to jobs across all major metropolitan areas in the Nation.

This report examines accessibility to jobs by transit in 49 of the 50 largest (by population) metropolitan areas in the United States. Transit is used for an estimated 5 percent of commuting trips in the United States, making it the second most widely used commute mode after driving. This report complements Access Across America: Auto 2015, a report of job accessibility by auto in 51 metropolitan areas and follows the Access Across America: Transit 2014 report. A separate publication, Access Across America: Transit 2015 Methodology, describes the data and methodology used in this evaluation.

Other top-ranked cities include San Francisco, Chicago and Atlanta.

A 2006 study from Professor Richard Wiseman and the British Council called The Pace of Life tracked the time it took pedestrians in 31 Cities worldwide to walk a distance of 60 feet.

35 men and 35 women were secretly timed as they walked along the designated stretch of pavement. Only adults were monitored, and the study excluded anyone walking in groups, holding a telephone conversation or struggling with shopping bags.

When the data was compiled, our fast-paced city ranked #8 on the list with 12.00 seconds to traverse the distance. Cities like Madrid and Berlin appear above us, and the top spot was grabbed by the residents of Singapore with just 10.55 seconds on average. Time to step it up people!
