In the Street (1948). Directed and edited by Helen Levitt. Cinematography by renowned NYC Photographer, James Agee, Helen Levitt, Janice Loeb. Re-edited version rereleased by Levitt in 1952 with musical score by Arthur Kleiner.

Acclaimed German Filmmaker Beautifully Captures the Hectic Stop-and-Go Pace of NYC

German filmmaker Oliver Schrott and his firm OSK recently traveled to the City and created New York City: Wait or Run, a beautiful video that perfectly captures our stop-and-go, hurry-up-and-wait nature.

The typical New Yorker seems to never be strolling. Whether it’s 5am or the middle of the night, the New Yorker rushes and dashes through the city. And even when he wants to stroll, he can’t - others will literally run over him. In this city, time is a luxury comparable in value to living space. And strangely enough, the people who aren’t running always end up waiting for something. You wait in line for a restaurant, for a concert or to get into the movies. You wait for a taxi, for the subway, for a hot dog on the corner. Waiting is as much a part of New York life as running and rushing.

Vintage Film Shows the Upper West Side's Street Life Back in March 1977

Local television producer Mark Mannucci recently uploaded this incredible vintage footage of Manhattan's Upper West Side shot back in March of 1977. The video features footage of storefronts, automobiles, landmarks and people, and has several interviews with some of the residents and people passing through the neighborhood. It's an amazing glimpse 40 years back into a much-changed UWS.

Vintage Film Shows Street Life on Broadway and 88th in 1971

Back in 1971, YouTuber Nicholas West shot this video from the central traffic island on Broadway and West 88th Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

I made this film when I was a teenager, with an old Bell & Howell Filmo 16mm newsreel camera that my Dad bought for me from a thrift shop for $5. This is the only film I ever made with that camera. The film's speed is indeed slowed down, but I did that in the digital conversion for upload to YouTube, in order to make it easier to see what was going on.

The effect of the then-vintage camera capturing life on the then-modern street is quite interesting to look at.

FUNPOV Seeks to Create Real-Life Movies on the City Streets Using a Hidden Camera

American novelist and poet Jack Kerouac once said, "The world you see is just a movie in your mind." This is the mantra that FUNPOV sticks too.

FUNPOV is a series of short movies, starring random people on the street. The short movies were filmed from the real-life and point-of view of the creator. A man of mystery, you never actually see the guy filming, as all of the films are shot from his point-of view. You do, however, hear his humorous voice and see his hands (most likely) high fiving someone when they least expect it! You might even catch a glimpse of his shadow riding a bike along a busy street.

These movies follow real episodes in my life, with one constant purpose: interact with strangers on the street, asking them to connect with me, and smile in this moment.

FUNPOV aims to create two movies per month. You can support the making of these short films by donating $1 per movie. The goal is to use the movies to reflect our fast-changing culture, and to discuss ideas and topics for the future.

Where you've come from is probably not more important then where you are going. So tell the story of your future, and then get there.
