The Halal Guys first came to the streets of New York City in 1990, when the three founders opened up a hot-dog cart in Midtown. They realized there was a demand from Muslim cab drivers looking for a halal meal, so they began serving American halal food from the cart. The Arabic term halal means ‘lawful’ and is often used in Islam to describe meat that is permissible to eat based on specific religious guidelines. But in New York, many people know halal as the affordable food they can find at many street carts across the city. At The Halal Guys' original cart on 53rd Street and 6th Avenue, people wait in line for the iconic combo platter, a foil dish packed with chicken and gyro over rice, accompanied by lettuce, tomato, pita, and the famous and secret red and white sauces.

For nearly 30 years, Elpida Vasiliadis, known as the Souvlaki Lady, has been serving up Greek souvlaki from her street cart in Astoria, Queens. Over time, it’s become a symbol of the neighborhood, her Greek heritage and family legacy. Elpida’s customer base spans generations of families who have been eating at her cart for decades. Elpida is no stranger to the food industry: Her recipes come from a restaurant her parents owned in Thessaloniki. Follow along as we take you behind the scenes of a day in the life of the Souvlaki Lady.

Danny and Elizabeth Rossi, a father-daughter duo, run a hot dog cart outside New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. As disabled veterans, they are given a special permit for their cart, yet there have been issues with non-vets getting their hands on these permits, allowing illegal businesses to flourish and causing overcrowding. In this video, Danny and Elizabeth share how they manage to survive in this oversaturated and harsh working environment.

You can find the Rossi family and their hot dog cart outside of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side.

King of Falafel & Shawarma is a local middle eastern food restaurant in Astoria, Queens with three food trucks, all of which serve up some of the best falafel in all of New York City. In this profile video from our friends at Munchies, meet Freddy Zeideia, the "King of Falafel."

King of Falafel & Shawarma has been serving mouthwatering Middle Eastern cuisine on the streets of Astoria for the last 17 years. The falafel recipe, with its unique oval shape, is a guarded secret of owner Freddy Zeideia, who mastered it with techniques he learned while growing up in Palestine. After being dissatisfied with the falafel and shawarma offerings in New York, Freddy took matters into his own hands by starting King of Falafel & Shawarma in 2002. Since then, his enterprise has grown, with a truck in Astoria, a cart in Midtown, and a newly opened restaurant in Queens.
