Noise pollution can have a huge impact on health and quality of life - causing stress and increasing risk for heart disease and other issues. So what are some of the tools that engineers have to limit loud noise? Raj Patel, an acoustics expert who helped design Manhattan’s Little Island waterfront park, explains how noise pollution can be minimized in metropolises like New York City.

The New York we know and love is one click away: cabs honking, pigeons cooing, bike messengers whizzing by, strangers gossiping, the hum of a local library. Anywhere you are can now become the city—all you need is Missing Sounds of New York, The New York Public Library’s new album.

A new immersive experience, the album is a collection of audio landscapes that evoke some of the sounds of New York City. Missing Sounds of New York, a partnership with creative agency Mother New York, is a love letter to NYC, connecting New Yorkers around the familiar sounds of urban life that they love and miss during this unprecedented time of social separation.

Six years ago, Brooklyn cinematographer Tim Sessler, owner of film company Brooklyn Aerials, created this interesting exploration of sound in the New York City subway called Bending Sounds. In the video, he tours several different subway stations, picking up the sound of various subway buskers and musisicans doing their thing.

For the best experience, watch it with headphones!! :) Shot within a couple hours on a sunny Saturday afternoon, "Bending Sounds" is a test/experiment to capture the inspirational sounds and visuals of the NYC subway. Thanks a lot to all the musicians featured in this video - and obviously a big thanks to the Vimeo staff for featuring it!!

Noisy NYC is a new tool created by a New York City-based software engineer going only by b__d055 that lets you see all recent noise complaints for your zip code either by map, or in text format. If you enter your zip code, the tool will pull up all noise complaints and give the neighborhood a grade based on comparisons to other zip codes. Check out the full site to see how your neighborhood compares.
