The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) recently created this great map collecting all of the historic locations of civil rights and social justice protests, demonstrations and incidents that have occurred in the Village over the past several centuries.

You’ll find well-known landmarks like the Stonewall Inn and Judson Memorial Church, locations key to the founding of the ACLU and the Young Lords, and the places where Lorraine Hansberry wrote and Bella Abzug lived. Learn the former sites of some of our city’s first African-American and abolitionist churches, as well as where the NAACP’s iconic “A Man Was Lynched Yesterday” flag flew. Find out where Billie Holiday first sang the anti-lynching anthem ‘Strange Fruit,’ where birth control began, and the spots key to the abolitionist journeys of both Abraham Lincoln and John Brown, among many others.

Check out the accompanying article to read more about the project, then check out the full map to immerse yourself in local civil rights and social justice history.

Between roaches, rats, and unfit landlords, few New Yorkers have control over the conditions of the apartments they pay exorbitant rates for. Housing advocate Yale Fox proposes a solution.

The goal of the film is to tell an emotionally powerful story to instigate genuine conversation around the issue of fear and how it contributes to violence in our communities. We continue to hold screenings of the film followed by conversation. Local community members can have their voices heard to facilitate policy changes in how communities and police react to violent situations. We hope to be one of the many tools used to help break the cycle of violence through productive dialogue.

The film stars Ade Otukoya as Jacob.

In our A Day in the Life series, we take a peek into the daily lives of the most interesting people in the food world. In this episode, Zagat and The Huffington Post spent some time with the team behind Drive Change and the Snowday Food Truck. Not only is the non-profit slinging award-winning food, it's also giving formerly incarcerated youth a chance to rebuild their lives.

Snowday Food Truck is run by Drive Change, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in New York that builds and operates locally sourced food trucks that hire, teach and empower formerly incarcerated youth.
