In 2020 Khrystyne & Nic Jaspers were in the market for a larger apartment, expecting that their family of three would soon grow to four. They were open to a variety of layouts and originally hoped for a two bedroom, but once they saw the spacious kitchen, ample daylight, and generous living room this one-bedroom (700 square foot) apartment felt like the right home. It was priced at $380k, so they purchased and put down roots in the uptown neighborhood. Both Khrystyne and Nic are educators; additionally, Khrystyne is an entrepreneur, working as a business consultant and personal consultant coaching families "through their space jams." She knows a thing or two about what makes a small home also a happy, healthy and beautiful home where kids and adults can learn, play and truly thrive. Being in their home, you immediately recognize that creative experiences are valued. Materials and cherished items have a place, but they primarily point to meaningful stories and lived experiences.

And you thought your New York City apartment was cramped! Brooklyn residents Evan Tyor and Luke McGinnis share an average-sized 500 square foot apartment which is plenty of space for the two of them. But every month, they host an orchestra of 60 musicians called Apartment Sessions, all crammed into this tiny space with their instruments. Check it out in this short video from our friends at Great Big Story.

Roommates Evan Tyor and Luke McGinnis share a passion for music and a 500-square-foot Brooklyn apartment. Every month, they open the doors of their humble abode to professional musicians from around the area, cramming every bathroom, bed and kitchen counter with instruments, music stands and musicians. Their sound is bigger than their four walls, so making room for a 60-piece ensemble—including a full choir—means getting creative. Welcome to Apartment Sessions.

The apartments in a new Manhattan building boast little balconies, tall ceilings, dishwashers and storage space. All in 360 square feet or less. It marks the city’s first experiment in decades with building super-small dwellings.

Living in the City with a family of four can be tough if you are not super rich. With average rents for 1 and 2 bedroom apartments hovering over $3k and $4k respectively, living in the East Village is especially tough.

A recent article on Dwell highlights a spectacular renovation of a 640sqft apartment to accommodate Michael Finger and Joanne Kennedy's family of four with room to spare.

Upon entering the apartment one would never guess its total size. The front door opens onto an 11.5-by-16-foot living room—an open space that belies the density of the remaining 360 square feet. Between two tall south-facing windows, a table folds down from the wall, revealing a built-in bookcase. It’s a utility surface most of the time, but it lifts up easily on its hinge and hides away flat to make room for company. “It feels surprisingly spacious,” Finger remarks. “For Joanne’s 40th we had a party with 16 people—only three of them were children!”

Check out the full article on Dwell for more about the apartment, layout and photos.
