Central Park's Belvedere Castle Will Soon Reopen After 16-Month Restoration

The beloved Belvedere Castle is set to reopen in Central Park following a 16-month renovation project. The restoration project began February 26, 2018, and addressed drainage, waterproofing and climate control systems. The site will reopen on Friday, June 28, but Eyewitness News got a preview of the upgraded castle on Tuesday.

Vintage Photograph Shows Statue of Liberty's Massive 1980s Restoration and Repair

Just like everything else in New York City in the 1980s, the Statue of Liberty fell into a state of disrepair. From 1984 through 1986, Lady Liberty underwent massive restoration, repair, and conservation efforts in which major structural elements were replaced, including the torch. The world-famous statue was wrapped completely with construction scaffolding, seen here in this vintage photograph from 1985. Bonus appearance of the Twin Towers in this shot as well.

Germania Bank Building Nearly Scrubbed Clean of Decades Worth of Graffiti

The iconic Germania Bank Building at 190 Bowery is a New York City landmark, not only for its facade and interior, but for its long-standing graffiti as well.

When it was the home of artist Jay Maisel for decades, the buildings exterior was never scrubbed, leading to more and more graffiti that would end up defining it. But alas, Maisel sold the building for millions last year, and the new owners have decided the graffiti needed to be cleaned up.

Our friends at Bowery Boogie recently went by to check out the graffiti-scubbing progress, and most of the decades-old layers of spray paint have been stripped away completely.

190 Bowery Will Soon Be Scrubbed of Graffiti

190 Bowery, a New York City landmark and once the home of artist Jay Maisel will soon be completely cleaned up.

The graffiti removal was expected; rumors abounded that it would happen last month, and the massive decade-old “NEKST” tag would remain. Guess there was a delay in the process. The first few panels of “buffing tape” arrived last Tuesday, and the effort continued through the end of the week. The above shot is an updated look at the Spring Street facade as of [July 1st].

These 8 Cute Goats Are Cleaning Up Prospect Park By Munching on Poison Ivy

The Prospect Park Alliance recently announced that it had hired eight new goat employees to help clean up and restore the overgrown Vale of Cashmere area of the park.

Learn all about their job in this video from our friends at WNYC.

When winds from Sandy damaged trees in Prospect Park, invasive weeds like poison ivy were able to take hold. Now the Prospect Park Alliance has brought in 8 hungry goats to help clear the woodlands so that native plants can be reintroduced to the area.

Prospect Park Alliance Hires 8 Goats to Help Clean Up and Restore the Vale of Cashmere

Vale of Cashmere may sound like it belongs in a Game of Thrones book, but it is actually a relatively unknown name of the neglected south-east portion of Prospect Park.

The Prospect Park Alliance recently announced it had hired eight new employees to help clean up and restore the area, but they aren't what you think…

Throughout the Park, storms like Hurricane Sandy have felled or damaged over 500 trees, enabling invasive plants to thrive and further harm the natural ecosystem. In the Park's Northeast Perimeter, where over 50 trees were damaged or destoyed, goats will be working alongside Prospect Park Alliance staff to restore the woodlands. The goats will eat these invasive weeds so that the Alliance can plant new native trees and plants next spring to beautify the landscape and bolster natural habitat for birds, and ensure the Park is more resilient against future storms.

The small herd of goats will start working in Prospect Park later this month.
